The Sunflower
The sunflower is the Greek symbol of Clytie a young woman who transformed into a sunflower while grieving in her garden over the loss of her love (Apollo). Clytie the sunflower, is always facing the sun, looking for Apollo's chariot to return in the hopes that she might be rejoined again with her love.
H.U.G.S. Play Therapy Tip!
Many of us wonder how to move forward after the death of a loved one and much more. Moving forward can be such a struggle. In keeping with the H.U.G.S. Program, we share a little play therapy tip. Take two pieces of clay or dough, two different colours. Mold one into something that represents you, such as a flower because you enjoy gardening. With the other piece mold something that represents your loved one who has died, such as a heart or a toy. Now take both creations and take a moment, now mush them together, really hard, keep mushing, so they look almost blended. Now take the two colours apart. You can't! Just as we can't take our loved ones out of our memories, or looks. I will always have the same blue eyes, giggle and resemble my brother who died. This activity displays that no matter how hard we try to take the past out of us, it will always be part of us. Which is great when we want to recall the happy time, and we learn from the hard times. We tend to want to just forget about it all, but in actuality that is not possible. So instead, embrace our past, learn from it and move forward. Just remember it is not what happens to us in life that creates who we are, it is how we handle it that creates who we are.
