January
by Rudi Masswohl

Champagne corks pop with noisy cheer, as we stand on the threshold of the year.
The New Year’s start is certainly a reason for this final celebration of the season.
We look out on the ice and snow throughout the land, we clear the sidewalk, snow shovel in our hand.
The roads are slippery, so take good care: there are now traffic hazards everywhere.
We are looking forward with some uncertainty to our future fate and our common destiny.
What will this year bring? We hope all the best, good health, love, prosperity, and all the rest.
We contemplate our waistlines in despair and come to terms with the extra inches there.
Will a crash diet be success or failure?
Should we get a new wardrobe from our tailor?

January is a deadly month in many a way.
The mail brings Christmas bills without delay.
We fret with pen and cheque book and we find that we are now back to the old dreary grind.
Take one more sip from your coffee cup and face the chores, which have, alas, piled up.
Now, get back to work you lazy bones!
Lots to do! Can’t you hear the telephones?
Winter nights last too many hours, so it seems.
We slumber, dreaming last summer season’s dreams.
Oh! Could we escape from this rat race and find some warm, exotic sunny place?
